(Sunday, May 22, 2011, 5:34 p.m.-6:12 p.m. CDT; during the 2011 Joplin tornado, part of the Tornado outbreak sequence of May 21–26, 2011) — The deadliest tornado to strike the United States in half a century roared into the heart of Joplin, Missouri, tonight with winds of 200 mph, claiming 158 lives (with an additional eight indirect deaths), injuring some 1,150 others and destroying about 8,000 homes and businesses.
