(Saturday, May 22, 1971) — Former Beatle John Lennon recorded “God Save Us” and “Do the Oz” today at Ascot Sound Studios, his home recording facility at Tittenhurst Park near Ascot in Berkshire.

The tracks were written and released as a single in the U.S. on July 5, 1971 (July 16, 1971 in the UK), with the hope of raising defense funds for the editors of the British-based Oz magazine, who were facing a conviction for contributing to the delinquency of minors.

Lennon’s vocal for “God Save Us” would be replaced by Bill Elliot on June 9, 1971, at EMI Studios in London with Mal Evans at the controls following the Lennons’ June 1, 1971, departure for a six-week stay in the United States, and credited to Bill Elliot & The Elastic Oz Band.
