John Lennon records ‘Oh My Love’ with George Harrison, overdubs lead vocal on ‘Gimme Some Truth’ 50 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (May 28 1971)

(Friday, May 28, 1971) — Former Beatle John Lennon tracked 20 takes (6 complete) of “Oh My Lovetoday at Ascot Sound Studios, his home recording facility at Tittenhurst Park near Ascot in Berkshire.

The track was recorded for Lennon’s second studio album, Imagine, which would be released Sept. 7, 1971, in the U.S. and Oct. 8, 1971 in the UK.

Former Beatles bandmate George Harrison joined Lennon today to play electric guitar at the session.

After completing “Oh My Love” (take 20 was the master), Lennon overdubbed his lead vocal to “Gimme Some Truth,” a song he had tracked on May 25, 1971.

Recording of “Gimme Some Truth” was completed with an overdub of another bass part at Record Plant East in New York City on July 4, 1971.

Also on this day, Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, were interviewed by Hilary Henson for the Nov. 9, 1971, edition of the BBC Radio 2 program Woman’s Hour.
