(Tuesday, September 11, 2001, 9:37:46 a.m. EDT; during the September 11 attacks, part of terrorism in the United States and the War on Terror) — American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757-223, crashed this morning into the western side of the Pentagon, headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, in Arlington County, Virginia, and started a violent fire.

All 64 people on board (53 passengers, 6 crew and 5 hijackers) were killed, as were 125 Pentagon personnel on the ground for a total of 189 deaths.

The plane departed from Washington Dulles International Airport in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, Virginia, at 8:20 a.m. EDT for Los Angeles. It had been taken over by five terrorists (between 8:50 a.m. to 8:54 a.m.) in a series of four coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda on the United States, collectively known as the September 11 attacks.
