Funeral services held for President James A. Garfield in U.S. Capitol rotunda 140 years ago this hour (Sep 23 1881)

(Friday, September 23, 1881, 3:00 p.m. local time; during the Assassination of James A. Garfield) — Services were held today at the U.S. Capitol in Washington for President James A. Garfield who died four days ago in Elberon, New Jersey, from complications of gunshot wounds received July 2, 1881.

Seventy members of the House of Representatives formed a double line around the rotunda. They were followed into the hall by members of the Senate, cabinet members, and diplomats from around the world.

Bible verses were read, prayers were offered and a choir sang. The main address was given by Reverend F. D. Power of the Vermont Avenue Christian Church, the church President Garfield and his family attended in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Lucretia Garfield, who spent a lonely hour with the body of her husband of almost 25 years before the services began, and her children did not stay for the ceremony at the Capitol.

After the service, the remains of the late President were carried from the Capitol to the depot where he had been shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a disappointed and delusional office seeker. Garfield’s remains would be taken to Cleveland, Ohio, for a final funeral and burial on Sept. 26, 1881.

Garfield was the second U.S. President to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
