(Friday, February 13, 1942) — American musician, composer, and actor Peter Tork, best known as the keyboardist and bass guitarist of The Monkees and a co-star of the TV series The Monkees (1966–1968), was born Peter Halsten Thorkelson today at the former Doctors Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Tork, who grew up in Connecticut, began studying piano at the age of nine, showing an aptitude for music by learning to play several different instruments, including the banjo, acoustic bass, and guitar.

He attended Carleton College before he moved to New York City, where he became part of the folk music scene in Greenwich Village during the first half of the 1960s.

Tork’s band The Monkees was created in the mid-1960s for a television sitcom. Tork was the oldest member of the band.
