(Monday, March 18, 1782)John C. Calhoun, the seventh vice president of the United States who served under presidents John Q. Adams (1825-1829) and Andrew Jackson (1829-1832) while adamantly defending slavery and protecting the interests of the white South, was born John Caldwell Calhoun today in Abbeville District, South Carolina.

On Dec. 28, 1832, with only a few months remaining in his second term, Calhoun became the first U.S. vice president to resign, and entered the Senate.
