The Argentine junta announced that army, navy, and air force units captured the British-held Falklands, 250 miles off the southeastern tip of Argentina, and the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, British dependencies to the east.

The invasion started with the landing of Lieutenant Commander Guillermo Sanchez-Sabarots’ Amphibious Commandos Group, who attacked the empty Moody Brook barracks and then moved on Government House in Stanley.

When the 2nd Marine Infantry Battalion with Assault Amphibious Vehicles arrived, the governor ordered a cease-fire and surrendered. The governor, his family, and the British military personnel were flown to Argentina that afternoon and later repatriated to the United Kingdom
