The rally was preceded by a march that began start on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, near the Museum of Natural History. It carried the demonstrators from W. 76th Street, down Central Park West, across 59th Street to Seventh Avenue, down Seventh Avenue to 42nd Street, and east on 42 Street to the area of Bryant Park, where a stage for speakers was set up near the southwest corner.

Speakers also included future U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, representing the Vietnam Veterans Against The War (VVAW).

By 5:20 p.m. EST, the last speech had been made, and only 300 demonstrators were left before the stage
