(Sunday, June 15, 1902, 2:45 p.m. EST) — The 20th Century Limited, an express passenger train service between New York and LaSalle Street Station in Chicago, Illinois, along the railroad’s “Water Level Route,” began service this afternoon, pulling out of Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

New York Central Railroad (NYC) inaugurated the 20th Century Limited as competition to the Pennsylvania Railroad, aimed at upper-class and business travelers. The Limited made its last run in December 1967.
