(Thursday, July 12, 1962, evening British Summer Time) — The English rock band The Rolling Stones played their first-ever gig tonight — billed as “Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones” at the Marquee Club in London.

The line-up included Mick Jagger, 19, Brian Jones, 20, and Keith Richards, 19, along with Ian Stewart on piano, Dick Taylor on bass, and Tony Chapman on drums (drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman would join later).

According to Richards, Jones named the band during a phone call to Jazz News. When asked by a journalist for the band’s name, Jones saw a Muddy Waters LP lying on the floor; one of the tracks was “Rollin’ Stone.”

The band played at least 15 numbers and was cheered vigorously by some in the audience and roundly booed by the jazz purists. Nevertheless, they did elicit excitement, and the owner of the Marquee, Harold Pendleton, decided to keep them on regularly.
