(Thursday, July 24, 1862, 2:00 a.m. local time)Martin Van Buren, the 8th president of the United States from 1837 to 1841 and the first to have been born after the American Revolution, died this morning of bronchial asthma and heart failure at his Lindenwald estate in Kinderhook, New York, the town where he was born in 1782. Van Buren was 79.

A founder of the Democratic Party, Van Buren had previously served as the 9th governor of New York, the 10th United States secretary of state, and the 8th vice president of the United States under Andrew Jackson from 1833 to 1837.

Later in his life, Van Buren emerged as an elder statesman and an important anti-slavery leader who led the Free Soil Party ticket in the 1848 presidential election.
