(Wednesday, October 17, 1962, 6:35-7:00 p.m. British Summer Time) — 12 days after the release of their first single (“Love Me Do”/”P.S. I Love You”) in the UK, The Beatles made their debut on television tonight, appearing live from Manchester on Granada’s local program People And Places.

The show took place in Studio Four of Granada TV Centre on Quay Street in Manchester and was broadcast only in the north and north-west of England.

The Beatles rehearsed before cameras from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and again from 4:15-6:00 p.m. The show was broadcast live from 6:35-7:00 p.m., and the group performed two songs: “Some Other Guy” and their new single “Love Me Do.”

While the footage was unfortunately lost, presumed wiped, a three-minute audio sample from a tape auctioned in the ’90s and purchased by The Beatles, featuring selections from various 1962 TV appearances, hit the Internet in December 2019.

The samples included “Some Other Guy” and “Love Me Do” from this day, recorded by Adrian Killen, a 16-year-old fan from Kirkdale, on a reel to reel deck wired to the TV speaker.

Only brief samples are available from the tape that was used to advertise the auction of the complete recordings. For instance, the “Love Me Do” sample lasts only 48 seconds.

It was sold at an auction and purchased by The Beatles’ company, Apple, for around £2000 per track.
