(Tuesday, April 2, 1974, 7:00 p.m. PDT) — Former Beatle Paul McCartney and his wife, Linda, attended the 46th Academy Awards tonight at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles.

The McCartneys were nominated for Best Song for “Live And Let Die” but he would lose to Marvin Hamlisch for “The Way We Were.”

The Sting, a caper film involving a complicated plot by two professional grifters to con a mob boss, won seven Oscars including Best Picture and George Roy Hill for Best Director.

Jack Lemmon won Best Actor for Save the Tiger and Glenda Jackson won Best Actress for A Touch of Class.

The ceremony, presided over by John Huston, Diana Ross, Burt Reynolds and David Niven, is perhaps best remembered for a streaker who ran across the stage naked while flashing a peace sign with his hand.

In response, host David Niven jokingly quipped, “Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?”
