(Monday, April 8, 1974, 9:07 p.m. EDT) — Hank Aaron, 40, of the Atlanta Braves hit his 715th career home run tonight off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Al Downing, breaking Babe Ruth’s all-time record of 714 before a crowd of 53,775—a Braves attendance record.

Earlier in the game, Aaron had broken another mark set by another Hall of Fame player, Willie Mays’s National League record of 2,062 runs scored in a career.
