(Tuesday, July 7, 1964, 2:00-5:00 p.m. BST) — The Beatles recorded an appearance for the BBC television show Top Of The Pops today at Lime Grove Studios in London.
The day’s recording involved three parts: a two-hour rehearsal for the cameras; from 4:00-4:15 p.m. a line-up for the assembled acts appearing; and recording from 4:15-5:00 p.m.
The Beatles mimed to three songs: “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Things We Said Today” and “Long Tall Sally.”
The performances of “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Long Tall Sally” would be first broadcast on BBC1 on July 8, 1964. “Things We Said Today” would be shown on July 29, 1964.
Not surprisingly, the BBC have wiped this tape so no copies or photographs of their performance exist.
The Beeb’s crew did shoot a few seconds of footage of Ringo Starr, who was celebrating his 24th birthday, for inclusion in that evening’s newscast (this footage survived).
After the recording was complete The Beatles were driven to Television House, the central London studio run by the Rediffusion company, where they recorded (between 5:30-6:00 p.m.) an interview for Scene At 6.30, which was shown later that night.
They discussed the film A Hard Day’s Night, which had had its world première the previous night.

Also, at some point following the Beatles’ return to England, perhaps today on his birthday, Ringo talked to New York DJ Murray the K via telephone.
Murray asks how the tour of Australia went, and Ringo thanks everyone who sent get-well cards while he was hospitalized with tonsillitis.
