(Wednesday, January 29, 1936) — The first five inductees of baseball’s Hall of Fame, including Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth, were named today in Cooperstown, New York (although a public announcement was delayed until Feb. 2, 1936).
Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson were also among the first inductees.
The official induction ceremony was held three years later on June 12, 1939.
