(Thursday, July 21, 2016, 10:18 p.m. EDT) — Businessman Donald Trump of New York accepted the Republican presidential nomination tonight at the party’s convention meeting at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Trump addressed the convention two days after he defeated Senator Ted Cruz of Texas 1,725 to 484 votes on the first ballot.

Trump had announced his choice of Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his preferred running mate the weekend before the start of the convention. Pence was nominated by acclamation on the second day of the convention (July 19, 2016) and delivered his acceptance speech the third day of the convention (July 20) at 10:41 p.m. EDT.

The Trump-Pence ticket would oppose the Republican ticket of former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia (nominated the following week) in the 2016 United States presidential election.
