(Monday, August 1, 1966, 11:48 a.m.-1:24 p.m. CDT) — Charles Joseph Whitman, 25, went on a shooting rampage today at the University of Texas in Austin, killing 14 people (and an unborn child) and wounding 31 others from atop the University of Texas at Austin Main Building tower overlooking the campus.

Whitman, who had murdered his wife and mother hours earlier to spare them “the embarrassment” his actions would cause, was gunned down by police.

An autopsy showed later that Whitman had a brain tumor.
