(Thursday, August 15, 1996, 6:49 p.m. PDT) — Former Senator Bob Dole of Kansas accepted the Republican nomination for president of the United States tonight at the 1996 Republican National Convention meeting at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.

Dole won the nomination Aug. 14, 1996, at 9:10 p.m. PDT by defeating conservative columnist Pat Buchanan from Virginia by 1928 to 47 votes on the first ballot.

Former Rep. Jack Kemp of New York was nominated vice president of the United States by a voice vote on Aug. 14, 1996. He delivered his acceptance speech tonight at 6:08 p.m. PDT.

Dole and Kemp would oppose the Democratic ticket of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore in the 1996 United States presidential election.
