(Monday, August 23, 1926, 12:10 p.m. EDT) — Legendary silent film star Rudolph Valentino, 31, died today at the New York Polyclinic Hospital where he had undergone a double operation for acute appendicitis and gastric ulcers on Aug. 15, 1926.

Born in Castellaneta, Italy, Valentino was 31 years old at the time of his death.

Valentino’s funeral Mass in Manhattan was held on Aug. 30, 1926, at Saint Malachy’s Roman Catholic Church, often called “The Actor’s Chapel,” as it is located on West 49th Street in the Broadway theater district.
