(Friday, September 13, 1996, 4:03 p.m. PDT) — Tupac Shakur (born Lesane Parish Crooks), a rapper and actor who built a career on controversy, died today at University Medical Center in Las Vegas of wounds from a drive-by shooting Sept. 7, 1996, while he was leaving the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon prizefight.

Shakur, born Parish Lesane Crooks, was 25 years old.

On August 31, 2026, South Side Compton Crips member Duane “Keffe D” Davis was convicted of orchestrating Shakur’s murder, but the shooter has not been conclusively identified.
