Video: 'Ford vs. Carter: The third 1976 presidential debate'
(Friday, October 22, 1976, 9:30-11:00 p.m. EDT; during the United States presidential election, 1976) — U.S. President Gerald Ford and former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter concluded their historic series of nationally televised debates tonight in Williamsburg, Virginia, by promising to stress issues rather than personalities in the final days of the campaign in the hope of awakening widespread interest among disillusioned voters.
Carter expressed regret over his interview with Playboy magazine, in which he discussed lust in unusually frank terms, acknowledging that he had not known exactly how to handle the controversy it provoked.
“I would not have given that interview,” he said.
Ford, for his part, acknowledged using what he called “rather graphic language” during the campaign.
