Video: 'Diana Ross & The Supremes - A' Go-Go [album songs] (12 clips)
(Saturday, October 22, 1966) — The Supremes make music history today as The Supremes A’ Go-Go reached No. 1 on the Billboard pop albums chart, making Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson the first all-female group ever to top the chart.
The album, released Aug. 25, 1966, replaces The Beatles’ Revolver at No. 1 on this week’s chart.
The achievement gives the Supremes another milestone during a remarkable year for the Detroit group. Their latest single, “You Can’t Hurry Love,” spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last month before giving way to the Four Tops’ “Reach Out I’ll Be There.”
“Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart,” another song from the album, reached No. 9 on the Hot 100 earlier this year.
The Supremes A’ Go-Go is the group’s ninth studio album and includes a mixture of Motown favorites and recent pop hits. Among the songs are the Four Tops’ “Baby I Need Your Loving” and “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” the Temptations’ “Get Ready,” the Isley Brothers’ “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)” and Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.”
The album was released as Motown was enjoying one of its strongest years, with the label’s artists dominating the pop charts. The Supremes have been at the center of that success, having already scored a string of No. 1 singles including “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” “Back in My Arms Again,” “I Hear a Symphony” and “You Can’t Hurry Love.”
Now the group has added an album milestone to that list.
For the Supremes, the achievement comes less than a month after a triumphant return to their hometown of Detroit, where they performed Sept. 26 at the Roostertail club as part of Motown’s “Motown Mondays” series.
And with The Supremes A’ Go-Go now sitting at No. 1, the trio has accomplished something no all-female group had done before: reach the summit of the Billboard pop albums chart.
