(Friday, April 19, 1985) — U.S. President Ronald Reagan listened intently today as Elie Wiesel, chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, implored him to cancel a visit to a German cemetery where Nazi war dead are buried.

“That place, Mr. President, is not your place,” Wiesel told Reagan at White House ceremonies honoring the 56-year-old writer. “Your place is with the victims of the SS.”

(Thursday, April 19, 1945; part of The Holocaust during World War II) — Leipzig-Thekla, a subcamp of the Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald near Leipzig, Germany, was liberated today by the U.S. 69th Infantry Division.

The camp had been established in September 1943 to supply labor for the German war effort. At its height, Leipzig-Thekla held approximately 1,400 prisoners.

(Friday, April 13, 1945; part of The Holocaust during World War II) — German SS and Luftwaffe troops forced 1,016 slave laborers (who were part of a transport evacuated from the Mittelbau-Dora labor camp) into a large barn on the Isenschnibbe estate near the northern German town of Gardelegen, which was then lit on fire.

(Wednesday, April 11, 1945; part of The Holocaust during World War II) — The Nazi concentration camp Mittelbau-Dora (also Dora-Mittelbau and Nordhausen-Dora) near Nordhausen in Thuringia, Germany, which supplied labor for extending the nearby tunnels in the Kohnstein and for manufacturing the V-2 rocket and the V-1 flying bomb, was liberated today by U.S. troops.

Around one in three of the roughly 60,000 prisoners who were sent to Mittelbau since it was established in late summer 1943 as a subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp did not survive.

(Monday, October 28, 1974) — Oskar Schindler, who is credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his enamelware and ammunitions factories, was buried today at the Catholic cemetery on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, 19 days after dying in Frankfurt, West Germany, at age 66.
