(Wednesday, May 2, 1945; part of The Holocaust during World War II) — The main camp of the extermination camp Jasenovac, established in Slavonia by the authorities of the German puppet Independent State of Croatia (NDH), was fully liberated today by Yugoslav Partisans.

From 1941 to 1945, an estimated 100,000 people were killed at Jasenovac.

(Monday, April 23, 1945; part of The Holocaust during World War II) — The remaining 3,000 inmates, including 1,400 women, at the Nazi concentration camp Flossenbürg in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, Germany, near the border with Czechoslovakia, were liberated today by the U.S. Army.

More than 96,000 prisoners passed through the camp since it opened in May 1938. About 30,000 died there.

(Sunday, April 22, 1945; part of The Holocaust during World War II) — The remaining 3,000 inmates, including 1,400 women, at the Nazi concentration camp Sachsenhausen in Oranienburg, Germany, (35 km north of the center of Berlin) used primarily for political prisoners, were liberated today by the Red Army and the Polish Army’s 2nd Infantry Division.

Some 30,000 inmates died there from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition, pneumonia, etc. due to the poor living conditions between 1936 and 1945. Many were executed or died as the result of brutal medical experimentation.

(Friday, April 19, 1985) — U.S. President Ronald Reagan listened intently today as Elie Wiesel, chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, implored him to cancel a visit to a German cemetery where Nazi war dead are buried.

“That place, Mr. President, is not your place,” Wiesel told Reagan at White House ceremonies honoring the 56-year-old writer. “Your place is with the victims of the SS.”

(Thursday, April 19, 1945; part of The Holocaust during World War II) — Leipzig-Thekla, a subcamp of the Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald near Leipzig, Germany, was liberated today by the U.S. 69th Infantry Division.

The camp had been established in September 1943 to supply labor for the German war effort. At its height, Leipzig-Thekla held approximately 1,400 prisoners.
