(Friday, June 10, 1960) — President Dwight Eisenhower’s press secretary, James C. Hagerty, appointments secretary Thomas E. Stephens and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Douglas MacArthur II had their car surrounded by stone-throwing demonstrators today in Tokyo and were trapped inside for an hour and a half at Haneda International Airport before a U.S. Marine helicopter rescued them.

Eisenhower set off on his tour of the Far East the next day and refused to postpone his trip to Japan.
