(Tuesday, October 13, 1903) — The Boston Americans (now Boston Red Sox) today won the 1903 World Series, the first modern World Series to be played in Major League Baseball, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 at Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston, in the eighth and deciding game. It would be the first of seven World Series victories by the Boston Red Sox organization (1903-2007).

(Monday, October 26, 1942, part of the Pacific Theater of World War II) — Japanese planes badly damaged the aircraft carrier USS Hornet today in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. The Hornet sank early the next morning Hornet with the loss of 140 of her sailors; the battle itself ended in a tactical victory for Japan, but ultimately a strategic win for the Allies.
