(Saturday, March 12, 1938, 8:00 a.m. CET) — The Anschluss merging Austria with Nazi Germany took place today as the main body of the German Eighth Army crossed into Austria along the whole line between Scharding and Bregenz.

Greeted by cheering crowds with Nazi salutes, Nazi flags, and flowers, German troops marched into Austria to annex the German-speaking nation for the Third Reich.

That afternoon, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, riding in a car, crossed the border at his birthplace, Braunau am Inn, with a 4,000 man bodyguard.
