(Saturday, April 6, 1968, 1:47 p.m. EST) — 41 people were killed and more than 150 were injured today when a double explosion and fire tore through nearly two blocks of Main Street in downtown Richmond, Indiana.

The primary explosion was due to natural gas leaking from one or more faulty transmission lines under the Marting Arms sporting goods store.

A secondary explosion was caused by gunpowder stored inside the building.
