(Saturday, April 6, 1968, evening local time) — Justice Minister Pierre Trudeau, 46, became the new leader of the Liberal party tonight and the next Prime Minister of Canada.
At the party convention in Ottawa, Trudeau won on the fourth ballot with 1,203 votes, defeating several prominent and long-serving Liberals including Paul Martin Sr., Robert Winters and Paul Hellyer.

As the new leader of the governing Liberals, Trudeau would be sworn in as prime minister two weeks later on Apr. 20, 1968.
