(Thursday, August 8, 1968, 10:25 p.m. EDT; during the 1968 Republican National Convention) — Governor Spiro T. Agnew of Maryland accepted the Republican vice presidential nomination tonight at Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida, saying a major objective of a Nixon administration will be “to make black Americans partners in our system.”

Just a few minutes before, Agnew was nominated on the ticket with former Vice President Richard Nixon of New York, defeating Michigan Governor Mitt Romney 1119-186.

Nixon would accept the Reublican presidential nomination later in the evening.
