(Thursday, August 28, 2008, 8:11 p.m. MDT; during the 2008 Democratic National Convention) — Senator Barack Obama of Illinois accepted the Democratic presidential nomination tonight at Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver, declaring “our government should work for us, not against us. It should ensure opportunity, not for just those with the most money and influence, but for every American who is willing to work.”

Obama had become the party’s first African-American nominee for President the previous evening, Aug. 27, 2008, defeating Senator Hillary Clinton of New York 3,188.5 to 1,010.5 votes.

Obama had picked Senator Joe Biden of Delaware to be his running mate. Biden was officially nominated by acclamation and accepted the nomination the previous evening, Aug. 27, 2008.

The Obama-Biden ticket would oppose the Republican ticket of Senator John McCain of Arizona and Governor Sarah Pain of Alaska (nominated in September 2008) in the United States presidential election, 2008.
