(Tuesday, September 17, 1968, 8:30-9:00 p.m. EDT) — Julia, the first weekly American television series to depict an African-American woman in a non-stereotypical role, debuted tonight on NBC.

Created by Hal Kanter, the sitcom was about a widowed single mother who is a nurse in a doctor’s office at a large aerospace company.

It starred Diahann Carroll, the first black actress to be billed as the star of a TV series, Lloyd Nolan, Marc Copage, Michael Link, Betty Beaird and Lurene Tuttle.
