(Monday, May 26, 1969, around midnight EDT) — John Lennon of The Beatles and his wife, Yoko Ono, and her daughter, Kyoko, arrived tonight at The Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal to stage their second bed-in for peace in room 1742.

Lennon and Ono began their day in at Toronto’s King Edward hotel, looking for a proper venue for the second bed-in.

It had been originally planned to take place in New York, but Lennon was not allowed into the U.S. because of his 1968 cannabis conviction.

Instead, the couple flew from London to the Bahamas on May 24, 1969, but after spending a night at the Sheraton Oceanus Hotel in Freeport, they realized that the Bahamas were further from the United States than they thought, so a bed-in probably wouldn’t attract as much publicity as they were hoping for.

Furthermore, the prospect of spending a week in bed in the sweltering heat was far from ideal.

Despite being held at Toronto airport for over two hours by immigration authorities, they were eventually allowed to enter Canada. They spent the night at the King Edward Sheraton Hotel in Toronto and then flew to Montreal the following day to begin the bed-in.
