(Wednesday, July 2, 1969, 11:15 p.m. BST) — English musician Brian Jones, who had been kicked out of the rock band The Rolling Stones less than a month ago, was found motionless tonight at the bottom of his swimming pool at his Cotchford Farm estate southwest of the village of Hartfield, East Sussex, in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in southern England.

His Swedish girlfriend, Anna, was convinced Jones was still alive when he was dragged out of the pool, and insisted he still had a pulse. However, by the time the ambulance arrived after midnight, the rock star was pronounced dead at age 27.

The coroner’s report, which said Jones died July 2, 1969 (not July 3, 1969, as cited by many sources), stated “death by misadventure” and noted his liver and heart were heavily enlarged by past drug and alcohol abuse.
