(Saturday, April 11, 1970, 2:13:00 p.m. EST/19:13:00 UTC))Apollo 13, carrying astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise, blasted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida today in man’s third attempt to walk on another world — the Moon.

An anomaly occurred when the second-stage, center (inboard) engine shut down about two minutes early. This was caused by severe pogo oscillations.

Swigert, a 38-year-old rookie astronaut, was named to the crew a day before the launching, replacing Ken Mattingly, who was grounded after exposure to rubella.

After orbiting earth until 4:48 p.m., the astronauts reignited a rocket engine to boost them out of earth orbit and onto an accurate course toward the moon, 246,500 miles away.
