(Tuesday, April 12, 1960, at approximately 1:00 p.m. PST)Candlestick Park, an outdoor sports and entertainment stadium located at Candlestick Point on the western shore of San Francisco Bay, opened today as Vice President Richard Nixon threw out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of a major league baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals with 42,269 in attendance.

Due to Candlestick Park’s location next to the bay, strong winds often swirled down into the stadium, creating unusual playing conditions.

Site of The Beatles’ final concert on Aug. 29, 1966, former Beatle Paul McCartney returned one last time to perform at the final event at Candlestick Park on Aug. 14, 2014.

The demolition of the stadium was completed in September 2015.
