Republicans nominate Garfield for POTUS, Arthur for VPOTUS 140 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (Jun 8 1880)

(Tuesday, June 8, 1880) — Representative James A. Garfield of Ohio was nominated President of the United States today at the 1880 Republican National Convention meeting at Exposition Hall in Chicago.

Garfield narrowly won the nomination after defeating former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant on the 36th ballot by a vote of 399-306.

Grant received the most votes on the first ballot (304), but fell short of the votes needed to win the nomination.

Chester A. Arthur of New York was nominated for Vice President of the United States, defeating Elihu B. Washburne on the first ballot by a vote of 468-193.

The Garfield–Arthur Republican ticket would face Democrats Winfield Scott Hancock and William Hayden English in the 1880 presidential election.
