(Saturday, June 18, 1910, 11:10 a.m. local time) — The first “ticker tape parade” was held today in New York City as former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was welcomed back to the United States after being overseas in Africa and Europe for more than a year.

The parade began at Battery Park and went up Broadway and Fifth Avenue to the 59th St. plaza, where it dispersed.

Roosevelt arrived in New York on the liner SS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria.
