It was the 26th of 27 World Series titles for the Yankees (1923-2009).

The Yankees were the first team in baseball to win three consecutive championships since the 1972–1974 Oakland Athletics.

The series was often referred to as the “Subway Series,” referring to the longstanding match-up between New York baseball teams; it was the first World Series contested between two New York teams since the 1956 World Series.
