(Tuesday, November 4, 1980, during the 1980 United States presidential election) — Former Governor Ronald Reagan of California, a Republican, was elected as the 40th President of the United States today, defeating incumbent President Jimmy Carter of Georgia, a Democrat.

Reagan and his running mate, former CIA Director George H.W. Bush of Texas, won 50.75 percent of the popular vote, resulting in 489 electoral votes.

Carter and his running mate, incumbent Vice President Walter Mondale of Minnesota, received 41.01 percent of the popular vote, resulting in 49 electoral votes.

U.S. Representative John B. Anderson of Illinois, a Republican, and his running mate, former Wisconsin Governor Patrick Lucey, a Democrat, ran as independents and received 6.61 percent of the popular vote (but no electoral votes).
