Video: '2nd January 1981: Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, arrested'

(Friday, January 2, 1981, around 10:30 p.m. GMT) — Serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, known as the “Yorkshire Ripper,” was arrested by police late tonight in Sheffield, England after the largest manhunt in British history.

Sutcliffe, 34, was believed to have murdered 13 women over a period of five years starting in 1975. All except two of his murders took place in West Yorkshire; the others were in Manchester.

Sutcliffe died at University Hospital of North Durham from complications of COVID-19 on Nov. 13, 2020.
