Truman relieved General of the Army Douglas MacArthur of all his commands in the Far East early today after MacArthur made public statements which contradicted the administration’s policies.

MacArthur, a popular hero of World War II and now the commander of United Nations Command forces fighting in the Korean War, was replaced by Lieutenant General Matthew B. Ridgway.
