Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney holds first studio recording session with new group Wings 50 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (Jul 24 1971)

(Saturday, July 24, 1971) — Former Beatle Paul McCartney held the first recording session with his new British–American rock band, Wings, today at EMI Studios (Abbey Road) in London, tracking four songs for what would become the group’s debut album, Wild Life, which would be released Dec. 3, 1971.

The band also included McCartney’s wife, Linda, session drummer Denny Seiwell, whom they had worked with on the McCartneys’ previous album Ram, and guitarist Denny Laine, formerly of the English rock band the Moody Blues.

The group recorded four songs on this day: “Bip Bop,” “Love Is Strange,” “I Am Your Singer” and “Dear Friend.”

Recording for “Bip Bop” was completed on this day and would be mixed on Oct. 15, 1971, for release on the original album (a “rough mix” made on Aug. 6, 1971, would be released in 2018).

Overdubs for the other three tracks were completed at later dates.
