(Wednesday, June 28, 1876, just before the session’s adjournment at 8:20 p.m. local time) — Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York was unanimously nominated President of the United States on the second ballot today at the 1876 Democratic National Convention meeting at the Merchants Exchange Building in St. Louis.

On the first ballot, Tilden finished ahead of Governor Thomas A. Hendricks of Indiana with 401.5 to 140.5 votes.

Delegates unanimously nominated Hendricks for vice president the following day on the first ballot.

The Tilden-Hendricks ticket would oppose the Republican ticket of Rutherford B. Hayes and William A. Wheeler in the 1876 United States presidential election.
