Mail carrier ‘goes postal’ in deadliest workplace shooting in U.S. history 40 years ago this hour (Aug 20 1986)

(Wednesday, August 20, 1986, c. 7:00–7:15 a.m. CDT) — Mail carrier Patrick Sherrill, 44, opened fire in a crowded post office in Edmond, Oklahoma, this morning, killing 14 workers and injuring six others before killing himself with a bullet in the head.

Sherrill’s attack inspired the American phrase “going postal.”

It is currently the deadliest workplace shooting in U.S. history, as well as the deadliest shooting by a lone gunman in the state of Oklahoma.
