(Thursday, August 25, 1966, approximately 4:30 p.m. PDT) — The Beatles took the stage at the Seattle Center Coliseum this afternoon, performing the first of two shows on the 12th stop of their third—and what would turn out to be final—North American tour.

Today marks two major milestones in rock history: the Fab Four’s final official joint press conference, held following this afternoon’s concert, and the last time they would ever perform two shows in a single day (returning for their second Seattle set at approximately 9:30 p.m. PDT).

Amid mounting security concerns, overwhelming noise levels, and a growing desire to focus on studio production, the band has privately agreed to end live touring following their upcoming finale at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park on Aug. 29, 1966.
