(Monday, August 29, 1966) — The Doors (Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore) began recording their first studio album for Elektra Records today at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood, tracking 18 takes of “Moonlight Drive” and 12 takes of “Indian Summer,” both of which would be held, re-recorded and released on future albums.

Following their breakout into professional studio recording, producer Paul Rothchild requested that The Doors go home to work on their material for two weeks.

When they reconvened, the band embarked on a blazing excursion through the studio, completing their legendary debut album sessions in just eleven days.
