(Thursday, August 29, 1968, evening CDT; during the 1968 Democratic National Convention) — Vice President Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota accepted the Democratic presidential nomination tonight at Chicago’s International Amphitheatre with a promise that on the issue of Vietnam “the policies of tomorrow need not be limited by the policies of yesterday.”

Humphrey had won the nomination the previous evening, Aug. 28, 1968, defeating Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota 1759.25 to 601 votes on the first ballot.

Humphrey had picked Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine to be his running mate and Muskie was officially nominated earlier tonight on the first ballot.
